A blogpost about the birdlife of Lake Como definitely seems a bit off topic for a website dedicated to birding in Franconia. Nonetheless I've decided to not be so strict in this matter, as I'm convinced that it will add some variety to it. I've spent a whole week on the western shore of Lake Como, which is in the NW of Italy. Although I wasn't there for birding, I spotted some nice birds now and then like Crag Martin, Alpine Swift and Short-toed Eagle. The area certainly has potential for being...

In the last two weeks I've focused my attention on the Main valley between Lichtenfels and Bamberg and could witness the first signs of the now starting wader migration. The most parts of the german inland aren't particularly good for observing waders and Franconia is unfortunately no real exception. Nonetheless, at some suitable sites the chances aren't bad for spotting at least a collection of common species. In the above mentioned area these certainly are the Mainverlängerung Unterbrunn and...

I know it is hard to believe, but my last birding trip was two months ago. And one thing for sure, the reason for this was not that there wouldn't have been any interesting birds to spot. In the Aischgrund for example Purple Heron, Night Heron and Little Bittern have all successfully bred in several places. Anyway, this morning I finally managed to get off for a brilliant trip. Despite the good birding conditions in the Aischgrund I chose instead the former quarry ponds of Trieb to try my luck...

Normally, May is an exciting month for birdwatching: many birds are busy with breeding activities, bird migration reaches its peak and the chance to find a rarity increases from day to day. Consciously, I say "normally", since May is in fact rather slow and very rainy in this year. The only real highlights were the three White-winged Black Terns I've seen at the barrage of Bertoldsheim three weeks ago, but apart from that there has been little of note. Especially, the season at the Altmühlsee...

Recently, while I was browsing my blog archive, I realized that I unconsciously tested all new parts of my equipment in the Luisenhain. Strikingly, my main motives have always been Pied Flycatchers, which certainly are one of the most attractive species breeding there. After the Tamron 150 - 600 mm (although not mentioned in the article) I returned in the next year to test the Nikon P900 and now I did the same with the Nikon D7200. Despite of the fact that I can't have enough pictures of Pied...

Yesterday I went once again to the Altmühlsee, in oder to test the latest addition to my camera equipment, a Nikon D7200. Unfortunately, the sun didn’t manage to break through the tough Sahara dust on this day, but nonetheless the new camera had seemingly no problems with the reduced light. My main targets were the dozens of passerines, that rested on the artificial island in the northern part of the lake. Both Willow Warblers and Blackcaps reached high numbers and posed furthermore nicely...

Almost instantly after the weather improved and already gave a hint of spring, bird migration set in with full strength. However this first good phase ended rapidly with a sudden drop of temperature resulting in a spectacular fall-out. Especially, in the surrounding area of Bamberg hundreds of Thrushes, Lapwings and Golden Plovers had been forced to rest. Sadly, just in this time I was busy in the Altmühl-valley and had no chance to get there. Nonetheless, I spotted some interesting birds...

The last week has been extremely cold with a minimum of -19 °C in one night. Now any lake nearby I know of is definitely frozen and totally unattractive to water birds. Furthermore birding isn't particularly comfortable when it is so cold. Hence I waited for the temperature to rise on the weekend, which turned out to be a good plan. On the last Saturday I went to a new birdingwatching site I haven't been yet, a barrage of the river Danube situated perhaps 30 km west of Ingolstadt. The weather...

At the moment it's really frosty here and there is no chance to find a lake or quarry pond that's not frozen. Therefore I can't report from many interesting sightings. Instead I want to show you some pictures of Long-tailed Tits I've recently seen in the Luisenhain and on the Kreuzberg and reflect on the identification on subspecies level. In the winter it is often worth to look a bit closer on these small passerines, since they could belong to the rare caudatus-race. Their most prominent...

The last nights have been very cold and hence the most lakes nearby are completely frozen. So it was evident for me that I'd start this beautiful sunny morning at the harbour of Bamberg. Yet despite of the icy weather there weren't many water birds respectively gulls. Generally, this winter has been far too mild for pulling in "good" waterfowl from the north. Even the traditional gull roost isn't viewable from the public sidewalk in this year, so you need a good portion of luck to see something...
